Erasmus+ Project: Knowledge Navigation – Maritime Erasmus Horizons
Mobility Period: February 4 – 14, 2025
Students from the Maritime School of Zadar participated in the Erasmus+ project Knowledge Navigation – Maritime Erasmus Horizons, where they gained new knowledge and skills through practical training, educational visits, and cultural activities. The program took place in Setúbal, Lisbon, and surrounding areas, allowing students to engage in tasks within the maritime sector, explore traditional shipbuilding, and learn about the Portuguese education system.
Maritime Training and Professional Development
The core part of the program was carried out in collaboration with the company Rotas do Sal, where students worked on various maritime tasks. Some of the key activities included:
- Participating in ship maintenance and repair work, including applying paint and anti-fouling coatings,
- Man Overboard rescue drills,
- Navigating and docking a small speedboat,
- Exploring the bridge and engine room of a ferry on the Setúbal – Troia route,
- Tying nautical knots and working with safety equipment on board.
Additionally, students visited the Mercado do Livramento fish market, where they learned about the Portuguese fishing industry and different types of seafood.
As part of their professional education, students traveled to Lisbon, where they visited the For-Mar institute, specialized in maritime training. There, they learned about the Portuguese maritime education system and compared their experiences with their schooling in Croatia. They also toured the Maritime Museum (Museu de Marinha), which presents the history of Portuguese maritime exploration, from the ships of Bartolomeu Dias and Vasco da Gama to the modern vessels of the Portuguese Navy.
Exploring Portuguese Culture and Heritage
Beyond professional training, students visited several cultural and historical landmarks, including:
- Sintra, where they explored the renowned Palácio da Pena, a castle famous for its colorful façades and richly decorated gardens,
- Lisbon, where they toured the Belem district, Belem Tower, Monument to the Discoveries, and Christ the King (Christo Rei), which offers a panoramic view of the city,
- LX Factory, a cultural and creative center located in a former industrial complex,
- Sarilhos Pequenos, a small town known for its traditional wooden shipbuilding, where boats have been constructed using the same techniques for centuries.
At the end of the program, students participated in a closing ceremony organized by Euromind, where they received certificates of participation.
